Kai Collective was established by London born travel blogger Fisayo Longe in 2016. Fisayo was born to Nigerian parents and named her designs Kai which translates as Wow in Hausa (Nigerian dialect), victory (in Chinese), willow tree (in Navajo), and keeper of the keys (in Scandinavian.) She said that “In different ways, she identified with its different meanings and really loved the sound of the word.

The London-based women’s wear brand is seen as attainable clothing with luxury aesthetics and a celebration of all female forms – not just the western idea of beauty. Kai’s creations are for multi-dimensional woman who embrace their femininity. Femininity is also incorporated in every aspect of the business as Fisayo aims to hire exclusively women from manufacturing to design to the marketing, promoting sisterhood as a core element of her ethos.

Kai Collective’s most famous piece is the Gaia dress, a sheer colorful print dress which has been worn by AfroGlobal celebrities such as influencer’s Jackie Aina, Temi Otedola and singer Tiwa Savage. Hashtags  #GaiaTakeOver has been assigned to the trajectory of the brand and  #GaiaAtHome has been used during the pandemic encouraging people to wear the popular dress whilst in the comfort of their homes during lockdown.

The brand that featured in Beyonce’s coveted black owned business list continues to be successful even during the pandemic and has had a huge impact on the fashion industry as its a brand that is completely black owned and caters for a demographic that isn’t often catered for in the industry.

Longe who said she originally created her designs for women like her is determined to make all women feel welcomed by offering sizes from XXS to XXXL. She’s also committed to using a diverse range of models to promote the brand such as model Adwoa Aboah who wore an item of Kai Collectives featured on the cover of Elle magazine this year.
